In a progressive stride towards fostering a society built on justice, ethical policing, and community collaboration, the Headfort Foundation's "My Rights, My Freedom" project marked a significant milestone on May 26, 2023. The Executive Director, Oluyemi Orija, facilitated a transformative capacity-building session at the Festac Police Station, Lagos State, to enlighten police officers on their pivotal role in upholding human rights.

The My Rights, My Freedom project, launched on March 19, 2022, is a visionary initiative by the Headfort Foundation. With the primary goal of educating Nigerians on their human rights in the language they understand, the project seeks to cultivate a harmonious relationship between law enforcement agents and the people through a dual approach of dialogue and training.

The recent capacity-building session at Festac Police Station showcased the commitment of the Headfort Foundation to transforming the dynamics between the police and the community. Executive Director Oluyemi Orija delivered an impactful session that emphasised the ethical responsibilities of policing and the imperative of adhering to the Police Act. Her address underscored the significance of maintaining ethical standards while ensuring the safety of communities—a powerful message aimed at curbing crime without committing crime.

The program at Festac Police Station was made possible through a collaborative effort with the Justice Development for Peace Commission, Festac Branch. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to justice, human rights, and the well-being of Nigerian communities.

The unique strength of the My Rights, My Freedom project lies in its dedication to educating Nigerians in a language they comprehend. This approach breaks down barriers, ensuring that individuals from diverse backgrounds can fully grasp their rights and responsibilities. By doing so, the project paves the way for a more informed and empowered citizenry.

At its core, the My Rights, My Freedom project is a beacon of hope for a Nigeria where trust between law enforcement and the people is not only restored but strengthened. The combination of dialogue sessions and comprehensive training programs sets the stage for a transformative shift in the relationship dynamics, fostering mutual understanding and cooperation.

As the My Rights, My Freedom project continues to unfold, the impact of its initiatives becomes increasingly apparent. The capacity-building session at Festac Police Station serves as a testament to the commitment of the Headfort Foundation and its collaborators to creating a more just and harmonious society. The ripple effect of this project is poised to extend beyond Festac, reaching communities across Nigeria and laying the foundation for a future where human rights are respected. Law enforcement is conducted ethically, ultimately bringing about positive change for all.
